If you’ve tried consequences, scripts, or stricter boundaries — and nothing seems to stick — this is where to look instead.

Understand what’s really driving behaviour — so your home feels steadier, and you stop walking on eggshells.

Inside this guide, you’ll discover:

• Why behaviour escalates when the conditions are off

• The 3 environmental shifts that lower activation before behaviour spirals

• How to reduce daily pushback without becoming stricter

• Why rhythm works better than rules

• What actually restores steadiness in a screen-saturated world

Hi, I’m Katie — mother of two, nature storyteller, and founder of The Wild Shift™.

After years restoring land in northern Spain, one principle became impossible to ignore:

You cannot force an ecosystem into balance.
You restore the conditions — and life reorganises itself.

I realised the same was true inside our homes.

This guide is the map that grew from that realisation.

Katie Stacey is the author of No Paradise with Wolves, named one of BBC Wildlife Magazine’s Best Books of 2025.

Hi, I’m Katie Stacey - founder of The Wild Shift™, mother of two, writer, and rewilder. I created The Wild Shift to help parents of children aged 10 and under lead their families toward calmer, more connected days through nature. The ROOTS Framework™ blends neuroscience with nature-based practice to support calmer nervous systems, deeper connection, and more grounded family rhythms.

Is this another parenting strategy?

No.

This guide doesn’t give you scripts or behaviour hacks.

It helps you understand the environmental conditions shaping behaviour in the first place.

When the baseline stabilises, you don’t need as many strategies.

That’s the difference.

Is this just about spending more time outside?

No.

This isn’t about adding more to your schedule or forcing big outdoor days.
It’s about how you engage with the environment you’re already in.

Nature regulates through rhythm, light, movement, and shared attention — even in small doses.

The shift isn’t geographic.
It’s attentional.

You don’t need wilderness.
You need repeated contact with the kinds of inputs your nervous system evolved with.

What ages is this best suited for?

This work is designed for parents — not a specific age bracket.

Because behaviour is shaped by the nervous system.
And the nervous system doesn’t stop responding to environment at a certain birthday.

These principles apply to toddlers, teenagers, and adults alike.

What changes is not the age — it’s the baseline.

And when a parent’s baseline shifts,
the entire system shifts with it.

Do I need to live near countryside or wilderness?

No.

I began this work as an urban wildlife storyteller — helping families notice peregrine falcons on tower blocks, wildflowers in pavement cracks, foxes in alleyways.

You don’t need to move house.

You need to change how you relate to the space you’re already in.

A doorstep.
A patch of sky.
A daily return to the same tree.

Regulation responds to repetition — not scenery.
